The cornea is a thin, transparent layer in the front of the eye. Corneal topography is an advanced test that is able to assess the unique shape and size of your cornea.
A topographer takes a detailed map of the entire surface of the cornea revealing its different elevations and unique features. It can be used as a diagnostic tool when fitting specialized contact lenses such as RGP (rigid gas permeable) lenses and scleral lenses. It is also a useful tool when diagnosing and managing certain corneal conditions such as keratoconus.
During a topography measurement, you will be asked to sit in front of a machine with rings. When the measurement is about to be taken, these rings light up, and reflect off the surface of the eye and are recorded in the machine to produce a detailed map of your eye. It is a quick, and non-invasive imaging technique. In a matter of minutes, the images produced by a corneal topographer can provide your optometrist valuable information regarding your eye health.
At Perception Eyecare, our optometrists have access to this specialized testing for all patients.
