HEADACHES AND YOUR EYES

Book Appointment

Are you suffering from chronic or new-onset headaches? For many, headaches are a symptom of an undiagnosed vision problem. However, this is not always the case which is why routine eye exams are so important!

We spend countless hours in front of digital devices, taking very few eye breaks. After several hours staring at a screen, it is common to experience tired and sore eyes, as well as blurry vision.

EYE STRAIN can be a common cause of headaches.

  • It can result from extensive screen time, with very few breaks. Our eyes are muscles, and focusing them in one distance with no breaks can cause them to fatigue.
  • Glasses to correct astigmatism, hyperopia, and presbyopia can help improve eye strain. When uncorrected, these conditions may cause us to squint, which can cause the muscles around our eyes to strain triggering headaches. Hyperopia can create blurry vision up close, which makes reading small print difficult. To compensate, we may find ourselves squinting to bring text into focus, which can create more eye strain and trigger headaches.

In CHILDREN, frequent headaches could occur due to undiagnosed vision problems which can lead to learning difficulties in school. For some children, their vision is great when looking at the board, however, when trying to read or do their homework at near, they lose focus. Children will squint, or strain their eyes to attempt to see clearly, which can trigger headaches.

A CHANGE IN PRESCRIPTION can cause blurry vision and in turn eye strain from trying to focus. In this case, a simple solution is updating the prescription.

Unfortunately, in some cases headaches can be a sign of more serious issues such as eye diseases, neurological deficits, and increased pressure in the eye. This is why it’s SO IMPORTANT to keep up with your routine eye exams so that these issues do not go undetected!
