What is Astigmatism?

Book Appointment

Astigmatism means that your eye is not shaped like a perfectly shaped circle like a basketball, but has imperfection curvatures on the cornea or the lens of an eye so shaped more like a football.

How do I see if I have uncorrected astigmatism?

Since the shape of the eye prevents light from bending and hitting the retina at the correct angle, it can cause hazy or distorted vision. Astigmatism can make vision blurry at all distances (both far away and up close). It is very common to have blur with night driving and in the rain with astigmatism.

How can I treat astigmatism?

There are numerous ways to treat astigmatism. The first step is to see eye doctors Dr. Jasjeet Shinger or Dr. Casthoory Viswanathan at Perception Eyecare so that they can do a full comprehensive eye exam and measure your eye prescription accurately. Once you have a prescription you can get glasses or toric contact lenses to help correct your vision. You will need glasses with good quality lenses that help reduce the distortion and give you better clarity. Another possible option is a type of corrective eye surgery called LASIK.
