A Humphrey visual field is used to detect and monitor eye diseases, like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and many other neurological conditions. Ontario drivers doing a medical review with the Ministry require a visual acuity test and a horizontal visual field, usually the Esterman binocular test.

The Esterman test is non-invasive and quick to perform. During the test, the patient first sits in front of the machine and looks straight ahead at a central fixation light, while keeping their head steady on the chin rest. Light spots of different intensities appear at different points within the patient’s peripheral vision and whenever the patient sees the light they press the button.

Typically for the Ministry of Transportation, either one or both of the Full Field 120 (done monocularly) and/or the Esterman binocular test will be required.
