Understanding the D15 Color Vision Test

Book Appointment

The D15 is a colour vision arrangement test that is done to see if a person has moderate or severe colour vision deficiency. It’s usually a requirement for jobs that demand high-level colour recognition for safety and accuracy, especially if they have failed the Ishihara plate test.

Some of these jobs may include: police officers/constables, Military personnel, firefighters, pilots, railway staff, employees of Transport Canada.

What happens during the test?

During the test, patients are asked to arrange a series of colored caps in order based on hue. This allows eye care professionals to identify patterns that may indicate specific types of color vision deficiencies.

What is the D15 Test Used For?

The D15 test is used for:

  • Detect red-green and blue-yellow color vision deficiencies
  • Determine the type and severity of a color vision defect
  • Requirement for occupational vision requirements licenses (e.g., pilots, electricians, technicians)

Benefits of the D15 Test:

  • Fast and non-invasive: The test is simple and typically completed within minutes
  • Accurate classification: Helps classify the type of color vision deficiency
  • Occupational screening: Often required for jobs where accurate color perception is critical
